Biological Characterization Fishing of shark fishing in the breeding area in Bahía de Chame: Implications in the sustainable management of the populations.

This project started in the year of 2016 and lasts for 17 months. For the realization of this project, CREHO works together with collaborators of other organizations including the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) in Venezuela, the Molecular Biology Laboratory (BIOMOL), and the International Maritime University of Panama (UMIP). The total amount of the project is B /. 59,750.00. In addition, its general objective is to “determine and characterize the use of nursery habitat for neonates and juveniles of shark species through biological – fishery information: analysis of fishery catches and landings, conventional tagging techniques, ecosystem analysis of the availability of food, and study of the genetic variability of the resident populations, which will allow to strengthen the measures of current regulations focused on artisanal fishing and establish conservation strategies for the ecosystem in the Bahía de Chame  to contribute to the reduction of these species’ by-catch.
